Welcome to Freya Volunteer & Befriending Coordinator We are thrilled that Freya has joined the staff team after being a long-term volunteer for Refugee Roots. Many of our participants will know Freya from Access groups and other Refugee Roots events. Over the summer she has been working short-term as our Community Coordinator but has now moved into the role of Volunteer & Befriending Coordinator. Freya has responsibility for overseeing all our volunteers, as well as matching participants up with volunteer befrienders for regular weekly support. Freya says: 'Before I started working here I volunteered with Refugee Roots for two years. Through my Geography undergraduate degree I gained an interest in migration and borders. I felt that the way that forced migrants were treated constituted a massive injustice and I wanted to make positive change so I began volunteering with Refugee Roots. I wrote my postgraduate thesis on how the asylum system causes refugees and asylum seekers harm. I am passionate about welcoming refugees and asylum seekers to become part of a community in Nottingham. 'The contribution that volunteers make to Refugee Roots is so valuable and the way that our volunteers are able to provide support and friendship to our participants is truly inspiring. I hope to provide volunteers with an enjoyable and fulfilling volunteer experience, and to utilise the valuable time and skills of our volunteers to help refugees and asylum seekers find a place to belong in Nottingham'.
