Refugee Week in Review Refugee Week ran from 15th to 23rd June 2024 and this year's theme was 'Our Home'. Here at Refugee Roots, we were involved in several events throughout the week. The launch event at Sneinton Market was hampered slightly by heavy rain, but thankfully we also had an indoor exhibition at Fishergate Point in collaboration with Sugar Stealers. Here we showcased some of the amazing artwork created by our participants, including some self-portraits and paintings on the theme of 'Home'. We also enjoyed some excellent snacks and refreshments and listened to poetry readings. It was great to join Communities Inc for the launch of their Myth-Busting Guide to tackle hate a prejudice against refugees and asylum seekers. More information about the Guide can be found here. On Monday 17th June, we held a special Refugee Week session of our monthly Cooking & Eating Together group, and enjoyed food together. Refugee Roots and the Nottingham Playhouse held an evening of performances from local and international artists, showcasing work that centres on Nottingham Refugee Week theme of ‘Home’. Additionally, the Creative Café participants performed group poetry together with David ‘Stickman’ Higgins. During the evening Nottingham Playhouse supported Refugee Roots with a digital exhibition, showing the photography project led by Ismail Khokon. We also exhibited the physical journey of how the poems were created with Stickman. This included first drafts, inspirational material and displays of the multi-sensory teaching experience. I was so proud to see the group perform in front of such a large audience...You could sense the poetry was written from the heart of the group. It was personal, moving and spectacular. Jasmine, Project Coordinator Later in the week we were involved in an art workshop hosted by the National Justice Museum, and an expressive dance session at Nottingham Contemporary. The week was rounded off with a closing party, also at Nottingham Contemporary, which was a great celebration of the events of the week and all those involved. We are really grateful to partner with some amazing organisations as part of Refugee Week 2024, including Fishergate Point Studios, Sugar Stealers, Nottingham Contemporary, Nottingham Playhouse, National Justice Museum, Communities Inc and others.
