Refugee Roots Partners with St Mary’s Church to Support Refugees and Asylum Seekers

Refugee Roots is proud to announce an exciting new partnership with St Mary’s Church in the Lace Market to launch an evening programme dedicated to supporting refugees and asylum seekers in Nottingham. Starting Tuesday, 23rd September 2025, the project will run every Tuesday evening from 6 pm to 8 pm and is powered by funding from Nottingham City Council and the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

About the Evening Project

The initiative aims to provide a safe, welcoming space for refugees and asylum seekers to:

  • Improve their English language skills through tailored sessions.
  • Socialise and build community connections.
  • Access vital support services 

This new evening project reflects Refugee Roots’ commitment to fostering inclusivity and breaking down barriers for those seeking refuge.

A Longstanding Friendship

Refugee Roots’ relationship with St Mary’s Church spans many years, and their collaboration has created countless opportunities to serve vulnerable communities. St Mary’s previously hosted the Refugee Roots Christmas Celebration, offering a festive occasion for participants to connect and share joy. 

In a critical moment of need, when Refugee Roots’ building was closed by the council, St Mary’s Church stepped up with a speedy response. They offered their space to ensure Refugee Roots could continue to support participants and function as a team during a challenging transition to a new office. Their unwavering support has been pivotal in our ability to serve.

The launch of the evening English and social support project signifies Refugee Roots’ and St Mary’s Church’s shared commitment to creating lasting, positive change in Nottingham. With the backing of Nottingham City Council and the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, this project is another step forward in empowering refugees and asylum seekers to thrive in their local community.
