The magic of teaching

Chris has been volunteering at our weekly Access classes to provide conversational English teaching. English classes are vital for the community as the language barrier can create challenges across all aspects of creating a life in the UK. Read about Chris' experience at our Access classes below:

"Teaching can be so many things but when it works or when it is special it can be magic, a moment in time. Teaching a group of language learners at Refugee Roots I had a moment that will live forever. The group were hungry to learn English. Their hunger, their drive, matched mine. The more determined they were to learn the more determined I was to teach and on this special day I felt the simply joy of teaching in a supportive environment."

"One particular student praised my teaching, but it was not that which mattered, it was his joy at learning, his thirst for knowledge and then one moment that stood out. He insisted he wiped my board and did it with devotion to detail, every pen marked removed, with care. It was a lovely moment, and seemed to say so much"

Thanks to the dedicated work of volunteers like Chris, our Access classes foster a supportive and social experience for our learners who can build their confidence, meet new people, and improve their communication skills.
