A bold step towards greater sustainability in an evermore challenging fundraising climate

Refugee Roots has launched an ambitious campaign to raise £100,000 in 2025 from sources beyond traditional trusts and foundations. This bold fundraising effort aims to ensure the charity’s continued ability to support an increasing number of refugees and asylum seekers.

Over the past few years, Refugee Roots has experienced remarkable growth. The organisation has attracted significant funding that has fuelled our expansion, primarily through trusts and grant fundraising. In addition, increased support from individuals, partners, and churches has strengthened our capacity to deliver crucial services.

Supporting more people than ever before

Refugee Roots has seen a dramatic rise in the number of participants supported. In 2021-22, we assisted 310 individuals. This number grew to 749 in 2022-23 and surged to 1149 between July 2023 and June 2024. However, while participant numbers have grown substantially, funding has not kept pace. Despite a 63% increase in income from 2021 to 2023, funding has since plateaued, creating financial pressure to sustain services at the required scale.

The past year has been particularly challenging. Many charity partners have struggled to raise funds, faced reductions in service delivery, or even ceased operations. Additionally, securing grants from trusts and foundations has become more difficult. A significant challenge ahead is the changing funding criteria of The National Lottery Community Fund, a primary funder of Refugee Roots. With the current grant set to expire on 30th June 2025 and new applications delayed until Spring 2025, the charity faces a funding gap of approximately £50,000 to £70,000 in operational costs.

Despite these hurdles, Refugee Roots remains committed to providing vital services, befriending and support for participants. Volunteers, staff, trustees, and participants continue to work together to provide a place of belonging.
