News Kitty's Placement: Crossing Paths and Cultures A Valuable Experience for Kitty Kitty joined us in November on placement, as part of her degree course. "I’m so glad I decided to do a placement with Refugee Roots, it’s been such a valuable experience. I’ve been able to meet and engage with members of the community who I wouldn’t have crossed paths with otherwise” Kitty, Placement Student "It has been such a meaningful and eye-opening experience learning about lives different to my own. I have gained insight into the lives of kind, compassionate, and interesting people who have been so open and welcoming. "One of the main activities that I have helped with is the English class at Trinity Church. I worked closely with participants to help advance their English skills, learn more about the culture and routines in the UK, and contribute to a caring community. I’ve loved going every week to get to know our participants and the other volunteers, learning about their home cultures, and seeing them progress. It’s been lovely to know that my participation has been meaningful to people as they have a chance to communicate with others in a safe, reliable, and accepting social setting. "Doing my placement here has given me so many invaluable skills that I can use for future employment opportunities, such as working with people in vulnerable positions. The team at Refugee Roots has been so kind and supportive, they made sure that I could gain as much as possible, by having an open line of communication, making an active commitment to helping me learn new skills, and gaining invaluable insights into the lives and experiences of refugees and asylum seekers whilst being flexible to accommodate my university schedule. "The other volunteers have been so kind and supportive, it has been so nice getting to know them and learning from them as they are so helpful and invested in the people that we work with. They helped me start teaching English as a second language and inspired me to get a Teaching English as a Foreign Language certification. "Since my placement has ended, I have decided to carry on volunteering with Refugee Roots as the time I have spent becoming a part of this community has been too valuable to let go of."
